Stepping out into the clear warm night under red Mars and a nearly full moon, she heard birds singing in the tree to the south. Normally you would only hear frogs, crickets and night creatures at this time of day but something had awoken the birds. Moments later geese flew across the sky, honking into the night, pale wispy clouds at the horizon faintly showcasing their movement. It was an unusual night, something alive and awake in the air. She knew she belonged in bed sleeping, resting for a new day. But the bright aliveness of this night was too much to miss. She could just stay up a few more minutes… just a few more.
